Archaeological Survey of India — Prelims Strategy
Prelims Strategy
For Prelims, a strong factual base regarding ASI is non-negotiable. Begin by memorizing key dates and personalities: Alexander Cunningham (1861 founder), Lord Curzon (revitalization, 1904 Act), John Marshall (Harappan excavations).
Understand the evolution of legislation: Ancient Monuments Preservation Act, 1904, to AMASR Act, 1958, and critically, the 2010 amendment. Focus on the definitions of 'prohibited area' (100m) and 'regulated area' (200m beyond prohibited) and the role of the National Monuments Authority (NMA).
Know the approximate number of centrally protected monuments (over 3,690) and differentiate them from state-protected ones. Identify major archaeological sites (Harappan, Buddhist, rock-cut architecture) and their locations, connecting them to ASI's work.
Pay close attention to current affairs related to new discoveries, significant conservation projects, or policy changes concerning ASI. Utilize mnemonics and flashcards for quick recall of facts. Practice MCQs that test both static knowledge and current developments, paying attention to distractors that often mix dates or responsibilities between ASI and other bodies.
