UNESCO ICH Lists are three specialized international registers maintained by the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) to identify, document, and safeguard intangible cultural heritage practices worldwide.

Unlike tangible heritage like monuments or archaeological sites, intangible cultural heritage includes living traditions such as oral traditions, performing arts, social practices, traditional craftsmanship, and knowledge about nature and the universe.

The three lists serve different purposes: the Representative List showcases the diversity of intangible heritage and raises awareness about its importance; the Urgent Safeguarding List identifies heritage at risk of disappearing; and the Register of Good Safeguarding Practices shares successful preservation methods.

India has been remarkably successful in getting its cultural practices recognized, with 14 entries inscribed across these lists as of 2023. These inscriptions are not just honorary titles – they come with obligations for the State Party to implement safeguarding measures, submit periodic reports, and ensure community involvement in preservation efforts.

The nomination process is rigorous, requiring extensive documentation, community consent, and detailed safeguarding plans.
