Oral Traditions — Definition

Updated 19 Oct 2026

Definition

Oral traditions are expressions transmitted through speaking, recitation, singing and performance. They carry knowledge, memory and values through interactions between people. Oral transmission can coexist with writing, and a written record does not necessarily replace the skills required to perform a tradition.

Some practices permit variation with audience and occasion, while others emphasise precise recitation. Safeguarding therefore requires attention to the particular practice, its learners and practitioners, and appropriate conditions of access.

Documentation is valuable, but preserving a recording is different from enabling people to continue performing.
