Prelims Strategy

For Prelims, a strong factual foundation is paramount. Begin by thoroughly memorizing the list of all 42 UNESCO World Heritage Sites in India, including their year of inscription, state, and a key distinguishing feature.

Pay special attention to recent additions (e.g., Santiniketan, Hoysala Temples, Garba dance). Understand the core provisions of the Ancient Monuments and Archaeological Sites and Remains Act, 1958 (especially the 2010 amendment regarding prohibited/regulated areas and NMA), and the Antiquities and Art Treasures Act, 1972 (definition of antiquity, registration, export control).

Familiarize yourself with the history, organizational structure, and key schemes of the Archaeological Survey of India (ASI) and the National Monuments Authority (NMA). Make flashcards for important dates, acts, and institutions.

Practice identifying tangible vs. intangible heritage examples. Regularly update your knowledge with current affairs related to new inscriptions, conservation projects, or policy changes. Focus on 'what' and 'when' questions, but also understand the basic 'why' behind key provisions or initiatives.

Solving previous year questions (PYQs) is crucial to identify recurring themes and question patterns, helping you prioritize your factual recall.
