Factory Safety Laws — Definition

Updated 19 Oct 2026

Definition

Factory safety law establishes duties and institutions for preventing workplace injury and occupational disease. India's current framework includes the Occupational Safety, Health and Working Conditions Code, 2020, commenced on 21 November 2025, and the relevant notified rules, including the final Central Rules of May 2026.

Employer responsibilities concern safe systems, plant, information and working conditions, while employees have duties and rights concerning safety. The repeal-and-savings framework preserves specified continuity from earlier legislation.

Effective safety requires functioning preventive controls and verified improvement, rather than treating training records, PPE distribution or inspection paperwork as conclusive evidence that hazards have been controlled.
