Cropping Patterns and Systems — Prelims Strategy
Prelims Strategy
Focus on memorizing seasonal crops (Kharif-Rabi-Zaid) with specific examples and their climatic requirements. Create state-wise crop maps showing dominant patterns - Punjab (rice-wheat), Maharashtra (cotton-sugarcane), Kerala (spices-coconut).
Memorize cropping intensity figures for major states and understand calculation method. Practice distinguishing between cropping pattern (spatial) and cropping system (temporal) concepts. Learn government scheme names, launch years, and objectives - NFSM (2007), RKVY (2007), NMSA (2010).
Understand MSP crop list (23 crops) and major procurement crops. For elimination technique, remember that Zaid crops need irrigation (eliminate rainfall-dependent options), Rabi crops need cool weather (eliminate hot weather options), and mixed cropping has no definite rows (eliminate row-pattern options).
Focus on cause-effect relationships: Green Revolution → rice-wheat dominance → environmental problems → diversification needs.
