Centrally Sponsored Schemes (CSS) are a crucial mechanism through which the Union government influences and supports development initiatives across states, particularly in areas that fall under the State List of the Seventh Schedule of the Constitution.

Unlike Central Sector Schemes, which are 100% funded and implemented by the Union government, CSS involve a shared funding pattern between the Centre and states. The primary objective of CSS is to encourage states to implement national priorities and welfare programs, ensuring a uniform standard of service delivery and addressing regional disparities across the country.

These schemes often target critical sectors such as health, education, rural development, and social welfare, where coordinated national action is deemed essential for achieving broader developmental goals.
