Prelims Strategy

Subtract liabilities before comparing net positions. A valuable house with a large mortgage can contribute less net wealth than a cheaper debt-free asset. Do not treat an asset-price gain as wage income, and do not assume that positive net wealth guarantees cash available by a deadline.

For top shares, write the ratio explicitly and update both parts. The move from 40/100 to 50/125 leaves the share at 40 per cent. A fixed numerator can still produce a rising share when the denominator falls. Distinguish a percentage change in holdings from a percentage-point change in concentration.

Keep empirical labels intact. The WID 40.1 per cent estimate concerns a top wealth share for 2022–23, while 22.6 per cent concerns income. Neither is automatically a Gini or a population headcount. Check the study's population unit, asset boundary and method. Where negative net wealth is possible, inspect the conventions before applying familiar ranges from non-negative income distributions.
