Ozone Depleting Substances — Revision Notes
⚡ 30-Second Revision
Revision checked 17 October 2026.
- Persistent compounds can reach the stratosphere.
- Reactive chlorine/bromine can destroy ozone.
- HCFCs still have ozone implications.
- HFC climate concern explains Kigali.
- Manage old equipment as well as new purchases.
2-Minute Revision
Separate ultraviolet protection from infrared greenhouse influence. CFCs and HCFCs have ozone implications; many HFCs avoid that problem but have high warming potential. Vienna provides cooperation, Montreal controls substances and Kigali addresses HFC phasedown. Servicing and disposal matter because installed equipment retains refrigerants after new procurement changes.
5-Minute Revision
Original policy drill: A public agency replaces some cooling units with an alternative refrigerant. Evaluate the claim “the whole fleet is now environmentally harmless”. Ask about remaining equipment, leakage, recovery of old refrigerant, energy consumption and application-specific safety. Explain why improvement in ozone-depletion potential does not settle climate performance. Separate purchase counts and technician training from measured emissions and atmospheric recovery.
