Monetary Policy and Banking — Definition
Definition
Monetary policy is the use of central-bank decisions and instruments to influence monetary and credit conditions in pursuit of the statutory objectives. Banking transmits these conditions through deposits, payments and lending, while assessing risk and maintaining financial soundness.
In India, the RBI operates within the inflation-targeting framework and the Monetary Policy Committee determines the required policy rate. A policy decision affects financing conditions through several channels; it does not automatically change each loan by the same amount or immediately control each price.
Effective analysis separates the target, the instrument, transmission through banks and markets, and the eventual economic outcome.
