Desert Ecosystems — Definition

Definition
A desert ecosystem is a community of organisms interacting with an environment where water is scarce or arrives unpredictably. Deserts can be hot or cold; high temperature alone does not define them. Plants and animals use different strategies to obtain water, limit loss and time their activity around favourable conditions.
Sparse vegetation can be a natural, functioning ecosystem rather than evidence of damage. Desertification is a separate process of land degradation in specified dryland zones. Understanding the topic requires distinguishing natural aridity, ecological adaptation and human or climatic pressures that reduce land condition.
