Groundwater Contamination — Prelims Strategy

Prelims Strategy

Classify a statement first: origin, transport, measurement or response. This helps catch category mistakes such as treating natural origin as proof of safety or adequate water yield as proof of acceptable quality. Keep geogenic and anthropogenic pathways distinct without assuming they can never interact.

For report-based questions, read the year, sampling coverage and contaminant named. Do not extend a local exceedance to every aquifer or convert a chemical measurement into a health count. For a hypothetical plume, use the supplied hydraulic information; surface distance alone is not enough to determine transport.

Check treatment claims carefully. An unspecified filter or boiling cannot be assumed to remove every dissolved contaminant. Match the intervention to the problem and distinguish protection at the point of supply from aquifer cleanup. During review, explain the exact assumption that makes each wrong option fail. This is more useful than memorising a list of contaminants without their origins, pathways or measurement context.
