Water (Prevention and Control of Pollution) Amendment Act	1988	This amendment introduced more stringent penalties for violations, enhanced the powers of the CPCB and SPCBs, and streamlined the process for filing complaints. It also made provisions for the Central Government to issue directions to the CPCB and SPCBs.	Strengthened the enforcement mechanism of the original Act, making it more punitive and giving greater authority to regulatory bodies to combat water pollution effectively. It aimed to address the practical difficulties in implementing the 1974 Act.
Environment (Protection) Amendment Act	1991	While not a direct amendment to the Water Act, the EPA 1986 itself has seen numerous rules and notifications issued under it, which effectively amend or add to the regulatory framework for water pollution. The 1991 amendment to the EPA specifically enhanced penalties and made provisions for citizens to file complaints, increasing public participation in environmental enforcement.	Broadened the scope of environmental protection and provided more teeth to the Central Government in issuing specific rules and standards for various types of pollution, including water. Citizen suit provisions empowered individuals to take legal action against polluters.
