Global Warming Potential (GWP) is a scientific metric that helps us compare how much heat different greenhouse gases trap in the atmosphere compared to carbon dioxide (CO2). Think of it as a scoring system where CO2 gets a score of 1, and other gases get scores based on how much more or less warming they cause.

For example, methane (CH4) has a GWP of about 28-30 over 100 years, meaning it traps 28-30 times more heat than the same amount of CO2 over a century. This concept is crucial for UPSC because it forms the foundation of international climate agreements and India's climate policies.

The GWP system was developed because different greenhouse gases behave very differently in the atmosphere. Some gases like methane are very powerful heat-trappers but break down quickly, while others like carbon dioxide are less powerful per molecule but stay in the atmosphere for centuries.

Without a standardized way to compare them, it would be impossible to create fair and effective climate policies. The IPCC (Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change) calculates GWP values by considering two main factors: how good a gas is at trapping heat (called radiative efficiency) and how long it stays in the atmosphere (atmospheric lifetime).

These calculations are complex because they must account for chemical reactions, atmospheric circulation, and feedback effects. The time horizon chosen for comparison significantly affects GWP values.

A 20-year GWP emphasizes the immediate climate impact, while a 100-year GWP provides a longer-term perspective. This is why methane's GWP is much higher over 20 years (around 82-84) compared to 100 years (28-30).

For UPSC preparation, understanding GWP is essential because it connects scientific concepts with policy applications, appears in both Prelims and Mains questions, and is frequently updated in current affairs through IPCC reports and international climate negotiations.
