Prelims Strategy

Draw two labelled radiation pathways: incoming solar energy and outgoing infrared energy. Place reflection on the incoming side and greenhouse absorption and emission on the outgoing pathway. This prevents confusion with ultraviolet absorption by stratospheric ozone.

For statements about gases, distinguish abundance from radiative role and forcing from feedback. Water vapour can amplify warming without making other drivers irrelevant. Reject absolute claims that the atmosphere stops all energy loss or that one cold event disproves a long-term climate pattern. Read whether a question concerns emissions, concentration, radiative influence or temperature; these are connected but different quantities.

In practice, explain each wrong option by identifying the substituted mechanism. A useful exercise contrasts surface darkening with an increase in an infrared-absorbing gas. Another asks why lower annual emissions need not immediately mean lower atmospheric concentration. Work from the stated physical balance instead of memorising slogans that conceal the direction of energy transfer.
