Sea level rise refers to the increase in the average height of the ocean's surface over time. This phenomenon is a critical indicator and direct consequence of global climate change, driven primarily by human activities that release greenhouse gases into the atmosphere. As this ice melts, the freshwater flows into the oceans, directly adding to their volume. While the melting of floating sea ice (like in the Arctic Ocean) does not directly contribute to sea level rise (due to Archimedes' principle, as it displaces its own weight in water), the melting of land-based ice is a major concern.

The consequences of sea level rise are far-reaching and pose existential threats to coastal communities and ecosystems globally. Low-lying coastal areas and small island nations are particularly vulnerable.

The immediate impacts include increased frequency and intensity of coastal flooding, especially during storm surges and high tides. This leads to the inundation of homes, infrastructure, and agricultural lands.

Over time, permanent inundation can displace millions of people, creating climate refugees.

Beyond direct flooding, sea level rise exacerbates saltwater intrusion into freshwater aquifers, contaminating drinking water supplies and rendering agricultural land infertile. This has severe implications for food security and public health.

Coastal ecosystems, such as mangroves, coral reefs, and wetlands, which provide vital services like coastal protection, fisheries habitats, and carbon sequestration, are also severely threatened. These ecosystems struggle to adapt to rapid changes in water levels and salinity, leading to their degradation and loss.

Economically, the impacts are profound. Coastal cities, often economic hubs, face immense costs for protective infrastructure, relocation, and loss of property value. Industries like tourism, fisheries, and agriculture are directly affected. From a geopolitical perspective, disputes over maritime boundaries and resource access could intensify as coastlines shift.

Globally, the average rate of sea level rise has accelerated. The IPCC's latest reports indicate a global mean sea level rise of approximately 3.7 mm per year between 2006 and 2018, a significant increase from earlier periods.

Projections for the future, depending on emission scenarios, range from several decimeters to over a meter by 2100, with potentially several meters over longer timescales if high emissions continue unchecked.
