Ozone Depleting Substances — Definition

Updated 19 Oct 2026

Definition

Ozone-depleting substances are chemicals that can contribute to the destruction of stratospheric ozone after reaching the upper atmosphere and releasing reactive chlorine or bromine. Important controlled groups include chlorofluorocarbons, halons and hydrochlorofluorocarbons.

Their significance lies in the ozone layer's protection against harmful ultraviolet radiation. A substance that avoids ozone depletion is not automatically climate-neutral: many hydrofluorocarbons were used as substitutes but have substantial greenhouse influence.

The topic therefore requires separate assessment of ozone-depletion potential, global-warming potential and the practical safety and efficiency of alternatives. These properties describe different environmental or technical questions.
