For Prelims, CITES demands meticulous factual recall. Start by memorizing the core facts: 1973 (signing), 1975 (entry into force), 1976 (India joined). Crucially, understand the distinct criteria and trade regulations for each of the three Appendices (I, II, III).

Focus on species examples, particularly those relevant to India (e.g., Tiger, Asian Elephant, Pangolin, Red Sanders, specific medicinal plants, recent COP listings like sharks or turtles). Pay attention to which Appendix each species belongs to and why.

Identify the roles of the Management Authority (e.g., WCCB in India) and Scientific Authority (BSI, ZSI). Practice MCQs that test your ability to differentiate between Appendices, identify correct permit requirements, and recognize key organizations.

Also, be aware of recent COP decisions and any new species listings, as these are frequent current affairs hooks. Create flashcards for species and their Appendix status. A strong grasp of these fundamentals will ensure you tackle CITES questions confidently.
