Prelims Strategy

For Prelims, focus on the factual aspects of NGT's powers and functions. Memorize the year of establishment (2010) and the specific sections of the NGT Act, 2010, that define its core powers: Section 14 (Original Jurisdiction), Section 15 (Relief and Compensation), Section 16 (Appellate Jurisdiction), Section 22 (Review), and Section 26 (Penalties).

Crucially, know the list of seven Acts under Schedule I over which NGT has appellate jurisdiction – often, questions will test if you can identify which Acts are NOT covered (e.g., Wildlife Protection Act).

Understand the constitutional basis (Articles 21, 48A, 51A(g)). Pay attention to the composition of the NGT (Judicial and Expert Members) and its principal and zonal benches. Be aware of the limitation periods for filing applications and appeals.

Current affairs related to major NGT judgments (e.g., on air pollution, river cleaning, CRZ violations) are frequently asked. Practice MCQs that test your understanding of these specific provisions and their application.

Focus on distinguishing between NGT's statutory powers and those it exercises through interpretation (like suo moto). A strong grasp of these factual details will be instrumental in tackling Prelims questions effectively.
