Vehicular Pollution — Prelims Strategy
Prelims Strategy
First identify whether the question concerns an emitted pollutant, a precursor or a secondary pollutant. Ground-level ozone formation requires atmospheric chemistry; do not accept a distractor that treats every pollutant as an identical direct exhaust release. Keep its local air-quality role separate from stratospheric ozone protection.
Next inspect the boundary and denominator. An emission factor per vehicle-kilometre is not a fleet total, and a tailpipe statement is not a complete life-cycle statement. Use a factor-times-activity calculation when the necessary figures are supplied. A cleaner vehicle can coexist with higher total emissions if activity changes sufficiently.
For scheme questions, preserve the announcement date, segment coverage and meaning of the reported figure. An allocation is not deployment; deployment is not verified utilisation or an observed pollution reduction. In review, explain exactly which extra assumption makes a wrong option tempting. This method is more reliable than treating every transport-policy headline as a universal claim about all vehicles and all cities.
