Coastal Zone Management — Revision Notes

Updated 19 Oct 2026

⚡ 30-Second Revision

Reviewed 17 October 2026.

  • 2019: G.S.R. 37(E), 18 January, anchors the discussed framework.
  • Identify the coastal feature and category before the activity rule.
  • NDZ distances, regulated extent and project permission differ.
  • Use site-specific evidence, consultation and continuing monitoring.

2-Minute Revision

Start with the coastal process, not a preferred building layout. A road beside an estuary may change tidal exchange, sediment movement and fishing access beyond its footprint. Identify the mapped category and the applicable approved plan before examining permissions.

In the 2019 framework, CRZ-IA concerns sensitive areas and features, IB the intertidal zone, II developed areas and III relevant relatively undisturbed areas; IV concerns coastal waters. Do not substitute a rural setback for the entire regulated extent.

Compare avoiding exposure, restoring appropriate ecosystems and engineered protection using site evidence. A public map assists screening; it is not project clearance. Finish with responsible agencies, measurable conditions and monitoring of residual risk.

5-Minute Revision

Retrieval exercise

Assess an original road beside an estuary. Draw the tidal and drainage connections, list affected users and compare two alignments. Explain why a public map screenshot and a compensatory planting count do not complete the assessment. Add one site-map requirement and one monitoring indicator.
