Ethics in private and public relationships concerns the duties created by personal ties and by roles exercised on behalf of others. Care, friendship and family responsibilities can justify special attention in private life.

Public authority, however, must be exercised through legally and morally relevant reasons that can be explained to those affected. The distinction does not remove honesty or fairness from private life, nor compassion from public service.

It requires recognising which role is active, identifying conflicts of interest and managing them through appropriate safeguards. A relationship creates ethical responsibilities; it does not automatically authorise a public preference.
