  • Moral attitudes concern rightness; political attitudes concern collective authority and choices.
  • The categories overlap, but formation does not prove validity.
  • Personal preference must not replace lawful official criteria.
  • Neutrality can coexist with candid advice and constitutional commitment.

2-Minute Revision

A moral attitude evaluates right and wrong; a political attitude concerns public power, policies or institutions. They overlap without becoming identical. Two people may share concern for vulnerable households but disagree about which intervention will work.

Their disagreement may concern evidence, priorities or implementation rather than the existence of moral concern. For an officer, distinguish personal political judgement from official treatment of citizens.

Non-partisan implementation of a lawful policy is compatible with professional advice about its risks. Tolerance requires a respectful and fair response to disagreement, not acceptance of an unsupported claim.

In a case answer, identify the actual disputed proposition before attributing an entire moral character to a policy preference.

Retrieval exercise

Analyse a hypothetical dispute about a transport fee. Identify one factual claim, one moral priority and one political preference. Show how an official can hear objections without promising to accept them. Finish with a criterion that would apply equally to supporters and opponents of the governing party.
