Understanding Others' Perspectives — Definition
Definition
Understanding others' perspectives means examining how a situation appears from another person's position, including their information, goals, constraints and experience. It requires listening and verification rather than assuming that one's own preferences are universal.
The purpose is better judgement, not automatic agreement. In public administration, perspective-taking can reveal barriers hidden by a file or a broad policy description. It also helps explain disagreement accurately and generate workable alternatives.
An official must still assess evidence, legal duties and competing interests. Respectful understanding becomes useful when it informs a reasoned decision and a clear account of what can and cannot be changed.
