Prelims Strategy

For prelims, empathy questions test conceptual understanding and ability to distinguish empathy from related concepts. Key memorization points: (1) Definition of empathy (understanding + emotional resonance + motivation to act); (2) Distinction from sympathy (feeling sorry for someone) and emotional contagion (automatic emotional spread); (3) Three dimensions: cognitive empathy (intellectual understanding), affective empathy (emotional resonance), compassionate empathy (motivation to act); (4) Key brain regions: anterior insula (emotional awareness), anterior cingulate cortex (emotional-cognitive integration), prefrontal cortex (regulation), mirror neurons (understanding others' actions); (5) Barriers: cognitive biases, organizational pressure, hierarchical distance, empathy fatigue; (6) Development strategies: active listening, perspective-taking, exposure to diversity, reflective practice.

Common traps: (1) Confusing empathy and sympathy—remember that empathy requires understanding perspective, sympathy is just feeling sorry; (2) Confusing empathy and emotional contagion—remember that empathy requires cognitive understanding, emotional contagion is automatic; (3) Assuming empathy requires abandoning fairness—remember that empathy and justice are complementary; (4) Assuming empathy is innate—remember that empathy is learnable and developable.

Elimination techniques: When unsure, eliminate options that suggest empathy is: (1) passive (empathy is active and motivates action); (2) the same as sympathy (they're distinct); (3) incompatible with fairness (they're complementary); (4) innate and unchangeable (it's learnable). Look for options emphasizing understanding, emotional connection, and action.
