Emotional Intelligence — Prelims Strategy
Prelims Strategy
For Prelims preparation, focus on memorizing the four domains of emotional intelligence (self-awareness, self-management, social awareness, relationship management) with specific competencies under each domain.
Learn key terminologies like amygdala hijack, emotional contagion, empathic accuracy, and emotional granularity with precise definitions. Memorize the names and characteristics of major EI assessment tools: EQ-i 2.
0 (Bar-On model, self-report), MSCEIT (Mayer-Salovey model, ability-based), TEIQue (trait-based), and EQ 360 (multi-rater feedback). Understand the neurobiological basis including roles of amygdala (immediate emotional processing), prefrontal cortex (emotional regulation), anterior cingulate cortex (emotional-rational bridge), and key neurotransmitters (serotonin for mood stability, dopamine for motivation, oxytocin for trust).
Practice elimination techniques by understanding common traps: confusing EI domains with each other, mixing up assessment tool characteristics, and incorrectly attributing brain functions. Create mental associations: amygdala = alarm system, prefrontal cortex = CEO of the brain, emotional contagion = spreading emotions like a virus.
Use acronyms like SEAR (Self-awareness, Emotional regulation, Awareness of others, Relationship excellence) for quick recall during exams.
