Kautilya — Prelims Strategy
Prelims Strategy
Focus on memorizing specific concepts and their definitions: Saptanga theory (seven elements), Mandala theory (neighboring enemies, distant allies), Matsyanyaya (law of fish), rajadharma (royal duty), and apadharma (emergency ethics).
Create comparison tables between Kautilya, Gandhi, and Buddha to handle frequently tested contrasts. Pay special attention to common traps: confusing Mandala theory with alliance patterns, mixing up Saptanga elements, and misunderstanding ethical flexibility as moral relativism.
Use elimination techniques by identifying absolute statements (usually wrong for Kautilya) and extreme positions. Practice identifying contemporary applications through current affairs connections, particularly digital governance initiatives and strategic autonomy in foreign policy.
Memorize key Sanskrit terms with translations and specific Arthashastra book references for factual questions.
