For Prelims, focus on memorizing specific facts about Buddha's life, key concepts, and their administrative applications. Memorize the exact components of the Eightfold Path and Four Noble Truths with their Sanskrit terms.

Practice distinguishing Buddha's approach from other Indian philosophers, particularly Gandhi and Kautilya. Pay attention to historical facts: birth place (Lumbini), enlightenment location (Bodh Gaya), first sermon (Sarnath), death place (Kushinagar).

Understand the chronological context (6th century BCE) and contemporary philosophical movements. Common traps include confusing Buddhist principles with Hindu concepts, mixing up the sequence of Noble Truths, and incorrectly attributing quotes or concepts to Buddha.

Use elimination techniques by identifying extreme options that contradict the Middle Way philosophy. Focus on practical applications rather than purely philosophical interpretations, as UPSC increasingly tests applied knowledge.
