Prelims Strategy

For Prelims, focus on memorizing key definitions and distinctions rather than detailed philosophical arguments. Create clear mental categories: moral vs intellectual virtues, practical wisdom vs other intellectual virtues, eudaimonia vs hedonistic happiness.

Practice identifying the doctrine of the mean in various contexts - administrative, political, social. Common traps include confusing Aristotelian concepts with similar ideas from other philosophers (Kant's categorical imperative, Mill's utilitarianism).

Use elimination techniques by understanding what Aristotelian ethics is NOT - not rule-based like Kant, not outcome-focused like Mill, not pleasure-seeking like hedonism. Memorize specific examples of virtues and their corresponding extremes.

Pay attention to contemporary applications in governance, as UPSC increasingly tests practical applications rather than pure theory. Focus on the contextual and flexible nature of Aristotelian ethics as a distinguishing feature.
