Quarterly external-debt report for December 2025 published

2026-03-30

The Department of Economic Affairs catalogue dates the release to 30 March 2026. The report measures debt at the end of December 2025; publication in March does not turn it into a March debt stock. Its maturity analysis helps separate original-term classification from obligations falling due over the coming year.

UPSC Angle: Explain how residence, currency composition, remaining maturity and reserves affect external vulnerability. A quarterly release is new information about an earlier stock, not a new borrowing transaction on the publication date.

Annual external-debt status report for 2025–26 released

2026-09-28

The Department’s catalogue lists publication on 28 September 2026. The report puts end-March 2026 external debt at USD 762.8 billion, including USD 167.5 billion of sovereign debt, with debt at 20.8% of GDP and reserve cover of 90.6%. These are dated report measures; valuation effects must be distinguished from fresh borrowing.

UPSC Angle: Assess debt sustainability through composition, servicing capacity and refinancing exposure rather than a stock total alone. Keep the stock’s observation date separate from the report’s release date, and distinguish total external debt from sovereign external debt.
