Vedic Period — Definition

Definition
The Vedic period is the phase of early Indian history studied substantially through the composition and transmission of the Vedas and related texts. It includes changing patterns of livelihood, social organisation, kingship, ritual and philosophical enquiry.
Conventional periodisation distinguishes an early Rigvedic phase from a later Vedic phase, while precise textual dates remain debated. The texts are not modern chronicles or censuses: historians interpret their language, genres and social references alongside other evidence.
The period should not be treated as one unchanging society across the whole subcontinent, or as identical with the mature Harappan urban civilisation that preceded it.
