Definition

The Indo-Greeks and Kushans were distinct ruling formations that linked north-western South Asia with wider Central Asian and Hellenistic networks in the post-Mauryan centuries. Menander is a major Indo-Greek figure, associated with Milinda in Buddhist literary tradition.

Kanishka is a prominent Kushan ruler whose chronology requires care. Coins, inscriptions, literary works and sculpture reveal different aspects of their history. Their significance includes political connections, exchange, royal representation and artistic patronage, but a single object cannot establish the literacy, beliefs or prosperity of an entire population.
