The Post-Mauryan Period refers to the historical epoch in ancient India that immediately succeeded the collapse of the Mauryan Empire, generally dated from around 185 BCE to 300 CE. This era is a fascinating study in political decentralization and cultural dynamism.

Following the demise of the unified Mauryan state, India witnessed the rise of numerous smaller kingdoms, both indigenous and foreign, vying for supremacy across different regions. In the Gangetic plains, the Sunga and Kanva dynasties briefly attempted to revive Brahmanical traditions, while in the Deccan, the powerful Satavahanas established a long-lasting empire, becoming crucial intermediaries in trade.

Simultaneously, northwestern India experienced a series of invasions and the establishment of foreign rule by the Indo-Greeks, Sakas, Parthians, and most notably, the Kushans. These foreign rulers, particularly the Indo-Greeks and Kushans, brought with them distinct cultural elements, leading to a remarkable synthesis in art, coinage, and religious practices.

Economically, the period was marked by flourishing internal and external trade, especially the lucrative Roman trade, which brought significant wealth into the subcontinent. Culturally, it was a melting pot, witnessing the evolution of distinct art schools like Gandhara and Mathura, the emergence and spread of Mahayana Buddhism, and the continued development of Brahmanical traditions.
