Major Rajput Dynasties — Definition

Definition

Major Rajput dynasties were distinct ruling houses associated with different regions and phases of Indian political history. Studying them requires separating dynasty, ruler, territory, capital and period rather than imagining one continuous Rajput empire.

Important associations include the Chahamanas with Ajmer, Paramaras with Malwa, Chaulukyas or Solankis with Gujarat, Chandellas with Khajuraho, Sisodias with Mewar, Rathores with Marwar and Kachwahas with Amber–Jaipur.

Their history includes state formation, warfare, alliances and cultural patronage. Similar names can mislead: the Paramara Bhoja is not the Gurjara-Pratihara Mihira Bhoja, and Mewar is not Marwar.
