Press and Literature — Prelims Strategy
Prelims Strategy
For Prelims preparation, focus on memorizing specific facts: newspaper names with founders and years (Bengal Gazette-Hickey-1780, Kesari-Tilak-1881, Young India-Gandhi-1919), press law provisions and years (Vernacular Press Act 1878, Press Act 1910), and key events like Amrita Bazar Patrika's language switch.
Create chronological timelines linking press developments with political movements. Pay special attention to the discriminatory nature of colonial press laws - this is frequently tested. Practice elimination techniques by identifying obviously wrong options first.
For statement-based questions, verify each statement independently rather than looking for patterns. Common traps include confusing similar newspaper names, mixing up founders and editors, and incorrect chronological sequences.
Focus on the 'first' and 'oldest' categories - first Indian newspaper, first vernacular newspaper, oldest surviving newspaper. Remember regional variations - Bengali, Marathi, Hindi, Tamil press development patterns.
Link press developments with contemporary political events for better retention.
