Bengal Renaissance — Definition
Definition
The Bengal Renaissance refers to a broad and contested transformation in intellectual, cultural and social life in nineteenth-century Bengal. New educational institutions, print, literary activity and reform associations supported arguments about religion, society and colonial rule.
The term does not mean that Bengal had previously lacked culture, or that the whole population experienced the same renewal. It identifies influential developments among particular social groups while inviting questions about access and exclusion.
Figures such as Rammohan Roy and Ishwar Chandra Vidyasagar illustrate reform through public argument and institutional action, but the phenomenon cannot be reduced to two biographies or to a single Western influence.
