Socio-Religious Reform Movements — Prelims Strategy

Prelims Strategy

Build comparison cards rather than a single chronological list. For each organisation, record its founder or leading association, establishment date, religious orientation and principal forms of activity. Keep Brahmo Samaj in 1828, Prarthana Samaj in 1867, Arya Samaj in 1875 and Ramakrishna Mission in 1897 distinct. A statement can contain a correct date and still attach it to the wrong body.

Practise separating doctrinal claims from institutional work. A school or service organisation does not by itself tell you the movement's interpretation of religious authority. Equally, an appeal to ancient texts does not prove opposition to every form of social change. Avoid treating “reform” and “revival” as mechanically exclusive boxes when a question describes specific activities.

For multi-statement questions, test each claim at the level at which it is written: organisation, leader, practice or consequence. Do not use a broad statement about nineteenth-century change to validate a precise claim about one movement. This discipline is particularly useful where several organisations worked in education but differed in their intellectual foundations.
