Champaran and Kheda Satyagraha — Definition

Definition

Champaran and Kheda were early Indian campaigns in which Gandhi connected local agrarian grievances with organised public action. Champaran in 1917 concerned indigo cultivation and planter–peasant relations in Bihar.

Kheda in 1918 concerned land-revenue demands amid agricultural distress in Gujarat. They were not two names for the same dispute, nor were both campaigns directed at an identical institution. Their importance lies in the methods of enquiry, organisation, negotiation and disciplined resistance, and in the experience they gave Gandhi and local associates.

They also show why a local grievance must be understood precisely before drawing broader conclusions about nationalist mobilisation.
