Causes of the Revolt — Revision Notes

Updated 19 Oct 2026

⚡ 30-Second Revision

  • Awadh annexed in 1856 on a claim of misgovernment.
  • Cartridge controversy: immediate provocation.
  • Explain policy → affected group → grievance → mobilisation.

2-Minute Revision

Background pressures explain why resistance had a social base; immediate events help explain when it erupted. Political, agrarian and military relationships overlapped, especially where soldiers had regional ties. Rumour mattered through perception and distrust, not because every reported claim must be accepted as fact.

5-Minute Revision

For annexation, revenue pressure and cartridges, name an affected group and write a causal link to action. Then identify which example best explains timing and which helps explain wider participation. Do not use “discontent” as the complete causal link.
