Prelims Strategy

Revise 1858 through a two-column card. In one column place the Government of India Act and the transfer of governing responsibility from Company to Crown. In the other place the Queen's Proclamation and its policy assurances. The documents belong to the same transition but do not perform the same function.

Check the meaning of “Company rule ended.” It refers to governance in India and should not be expanded into the claim that the corporation was legally dissolved at that moment. Similarly, Crown government does not mean representative Indian government or independence. Questions may use an accurate event to invite an inaccurate inference about sovereignty.

For statements about princes, religion or administrative treatment, distinguish a declared policy from a claim of complete implementation. An assurance of non-interference cannot validate every later practice. Finally, keep consequences after suppression separate from causes before the outbreak. A change in army organisation or imperial policy after 1857 cannot be used as a prior grievance without additional chronological evidence.
