Revolt of 1857 — Prelims Strategy
Prelims Strategy
Arrange revision into causes, centres and consequences. Under causes, separate the cartridge controversy from earlier annexations and social-economic grievances. Under centres, associate leaders with the places in which they acted, rather than assuming that Delhi directed every regional campaign. Under consequences, place the transfer to Crown rule in 1858, after the outbreak at Meerut on 10 May 1857.
Watch the level of a statement. A correct claim about one region may become false when applied to the entire subcontinent. Widespread civilian participation in important centres does not establish uniform national participation; the symbolic role of the Mughal emperor does not prove a centralised rebel administration.
Distinguish the Company as governing authority from the legal existence of the company as a corporate body. The transfer of government in 1858 should not be paraphrased as the company's immediate corporate dissolution. Finally, read interpretive labels as claims requiring evidence. A question may ask what a source calls the uprising without requiring that label to be adopted as a complete explanation of its character.
