Lala Lajpat Rai — Definition
Definition
Lala Lajpat Rai was a nationalist leader whose work connected political agitation with education, social organisation and economic self-reliance. Associated with the assertive current in early twentieth-century nationalism, he also participated in institutional and labour-related public life.
His deportation to Mandalay in 1907 and his leadership during the protest against the Simon Commission in 1928 are important milestones, but neither alone captures his career. He died on 17 November 1928 after injuries suffered during the Lahore protest.
Studying him requires connecting activities across phases of nationalism rather than reducing his significance to a slogan, a trio of names or the circumstances of his death.
