Swadeshi and Partition of Bengal — Prelims Strategy
Prelims Strategy
Anchor the sequence with partition taking effect on 16 October 1905 and annulment in 1911. Keep the decision, its implementation and its later reversal distinct. Questions may attach a true event to the wrong stage or treat annulment as the beginning rather than an outcome of anti-partition politics.
Distinguish boycott from Swadeshi. Boycott concerns withdrawal; Swadeshi concerns support for indigenous activity and capacity. They often operated together, but a statement that describes establishing national education is not describing a consumer refusal alone. Likewise, do not reduce the movement to textiles when it involved wider educational, cultural and organisational work.
Read claims about participation carefully. New forms of mobilisation do not prove equal involvement by every region or social group. A cultural symbol's use by organisers does not establish that it had the same meaning for all audiences. For multi-statement questions, evaluate the political demand, method and claimed consequence separately; an accurate description of a tactic cannot validate an exaggerated assertion about its national reach.
