Significance and Impact — Definition
Definition
This topic concerns the significance and impact of the Non-Cooperation Movement, rather than the whole history of Gandhian politics. Launched in 1920, the movement sought to weaken colonial authority by withdrawing selected forms of cooperation and expanding participation in national politics.
Its effects included new organisational experience, wider social mobilisation and economic pressure through boycott, but participation and outcomes varied. Gandhi suspended the movement after the violence at Chauri Chaura in February 1922.
Assessment must therefore distinguish immediate political results from changes in political participation and organisation, and avoid treating suspension either as proof of complete failure or as an irrelevant detail.
