Gandhi's Fast and Poona Pact — Prelims Strategy
Prelims Strategy
Keep the sequence clear: Communal Award, Gandhi's fast and the Poona Pact of 24 September 1932. A question may retain the correct year while reversing the causal order. The pact modified the proposed arrangement for the Depressed Classes; do not generalise that change to every community covered by colonial electoral provisions.
Practise the distinction between separate electorates and reserved seats within joint electorates. Ask who selects candidates at a preliminary stage and who participates in the final election. A special primary mechanism does not mean the final election remains a separate electorate. This is a common source of plausible confusion because both stages involve representation safeguards.
Distinguish negotiation, influence and formal signature. Gandhi's central role in the crisis does not automatically make him a signatory to every document associated with it. Avoid unsupported numerical seat totals unless you have revised them from a reliable text. The essential mechanism can be understood accurately through the electorate, reservation and selection stages rather than guessed figures.
