Indian Independence Act 1947 — Revision Notes

Updated 19 Oct 2026

⚡ 30-Second Revision

  • 18 July 1947: royal assent.
  • 15 August 1947: appointed day; two independent Dominions.
  • Section 6: legislative autonomy; later UK Acts need Dominion extension.
  • Sections 7–8: paramountcy lapses; transitional constitutional government.
  • 26 January 1950: India’s republican Constitution comes into force.

2-Minute Revision

The new legislatures acquired independent competence while inherited machinery continued provisionally. The Constituent Assemblies had an initial constitutional role. Crown paramountcy over princely states lapsed; it did not automatically become Indian paramountcy. The statute created a legal transition, leaving further boundary, accession and constitution-making processes to be completed.

5-Minute Revision

Classify five statements as immediate effect or further task: independent Dominion law-making; operation of adapted 1935 machinery; accession of a particular state; final boundary award; commencement of the republican Constitution. Explain why the first two can coexist. Then correct “royal assent and independence happened on the same statutory date.”
