Congress Socialist Party — Revision Notes
Updated 19 Oct 2026
⚡ 30-Second Revision
- May 1934, Patna: founding milestone.
- Narendra Deva and Jayaprakash Narayan.
- Within Congress at formation.
- Nehru: socialist sympathy, no CSP membership.
- Quit India 1942; Nasik separation March 1948.
2-Minute Revision
The CSP organised socialism within a broad national coalition. Its programme linked independence with changes in land, industry and social power. Mass work and anti-colonial participation accompanied ideological debate. The later separation from Congress was a distinct post-independence step, and formal membership should not be inferred from sympathy alone.
5-Minute Revision
Draw a timeline with 1934, 1942 and 1948, stating the organisational relationship at each point. Add a separate box for Nehru's outlook and non-membership. Then explain one advantage and one tension in pursuing a socialist programme within a broad anti-colonial coalition.
