Left-Wing Politics — Mains Strategy
Mains Strategy
Begin by explaining the left-wing link between national independence and social-economic reconstruction. Organise the discussion around ideas, political organisations and mass mobilisation. The Russian Revolution provides an international context, while Indian labour and agrarian conditions explain why those ideas acquired local relevance. Avoid making the account solely a story of imported doctrine.
Use distinct examples: communist organisation, the CSP within Congress, AITUC and the Kisan Sabha. Explain what each contributes to the argument rather than listing names. Discuss the tension between a broad anti-colonial alliance and more specific class demands, including differences in how groups approached Congress. Keep organisational milestones and prosecutions separate.
Assess significance and limits together. The Left expanded debate about land, industry and working people's interests, but did not form one uniform current or represent an internally identical social base. Conclude by showing how it changed the questions asked about freedom. A programme's ambition should be evaluated historically without being mistaken for an achieved policy settlement or the unanimous view of nationalism.
