Kasturba Gandhi, affectionately known as 'Ba' (mother), was the wife of Mahatma Gandhi and a significant figure in India's freedom struggle in her own right. Born in 1869 in Porbandar, Gujarat, she married Gandhi in 1883 when both were teenagers.

While initially living a traditional life, Kasturba gradually emerged as a powerful force in the independence movement and social reform activities. Her journey from a shy, illiterate village girl to a confident leader who could address public gatherings and organize resistance movements is remarkable.

She supported Gandhi's experiments with truth and non-violence, often at great personal cost. During their time in South Africa (1893-1915), she helped establish the Phoenix Settlement and supported the Satyagraha movement against discriminatory laws.

Back in India, she became an integral part of ashram life at Sabarmati, promoting khadi, fighting untouchability, and working for women's education. Her participation in the freedom struggle was not merely supportive but active and independent.

She led women's groups, organized protests, and was imprisoned multiple times. During the Salt Satyagraha (1930), while Gandhi marched to Dandi, Kasturba organized women's participation and maintained the movement's momentum.

Her role in the Quit India Movement (1942) was particularly significant, as she continued organizing resistance even when Gandhi was imprisoned. She addressed public meetings, inspired women to join the struggle, and maintained the movement's spirit.

Her death in 1944 while imprisoned at Aga Khan Palace made her a martyr for the cause. Kasturba's significance lies not just in being Gandhi's wife, but in her independent contributions to women's empowerment, social reform, and the freedom struggle.

She demonstrated that the independence movement was not just about political freedom but also about social transformation, particularly for women. Her life story illustrates the evolution of Indian women's participation in public life and their crucial role in achieving independence.
