All India Trade Union Congress — Historical Overview
Historical Overview
Place AITUC at Bombay in 1920 and identify Lala Lajpat Rai as the inaugural presiding leader. Keep this event separate from Kanpur in 1925 in communist organisational history and Patna in 1934 in Congress Socialist Party history. Related political currents do not make these institutions interchangeable.
A federation coordinates affiliated unions. It can connect workplace grievances with demands for wider protection, such as compensation for injury, sickness insurance and leave. A local wage settlement and a national legislative demand operate at different levels. The first depends on a specific employment relationship; the second seeks a broader institutional rule.
The relationship with nationalism combined cooperation and distinct interests. Workers could support political freedom while seeking changes in economic conditions. Nationalist leadership participation did not turn every worker into a follower of one ideology, and Indian ownership did not eliminate disputes over wages or working time.
International representation provided another arena. Participation in the International Labour Organization helped give workers a collective voice, but representation is different from adopting and implementing a standard.
Read the documents accordingly: a conference resolution proves a formal position, a settlement records an agreement, and beneficiary evidence is needed to establish coverage. Affiliated membership is an organisational count, not automatically the entire wage-working population.
